Gut Health - The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

Remember the concept -

Inflammation and Metabolic Dysfunction → Free Radicals → Oxidative Stress → DNA and Mitochondria Damage

Good digestive health is essential for overall well-being and plays a critical role in healing chronic diseases. The digestive system makes up 70% of our immune barrier, and poor gut health significantly contributes to inflammation, inadequate nutrient absorption, impaired neurotransmitter production and brain health, poor detoxification, and ultimately chronic disease

One of the first tests I prioritize is a comprehensive stool ecology to assess gut health. This thorough stool test can detect infections such as candida, parasites, viruses, bacterial infections, bacterial overgrowth like SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth),  SIFO (Small Intestinal Fungal Overgrowth), dysbiosis (imbalances in gut bacteria), inflammation, digestive insufficiency, gut barrier compromise/leaky gut, immune response tolerance, and nutrient absorption issues. Additionally, I may evaluate for food sensitivities as part of a holistic assessment.

Gut health testing is one of the most important steps for both preventing and healing chronic diseases.

Note: Conventional stool tests typically performed at your doctor’s office do not cover most of the factors listed above.

Signs of Poor Gut Health

  1. Gas
  2. Bloating
  3. Distended belly
  4. Weight gain
  5. Reflux
  6. Constipation
  7. Diarrhea
  8. Fatigue
  9. Autoimmune conditions
  10. Achy or sore joints/muscles
  11. Allergies and sinus issues
  12. Excess mucus production
  13. Skin conditions such as eczema
  14. Food sensitivities
  15. Poor sleep
  16. Headaches

Plan to Heal the Gut

  1. Proper Testing – You can’t fix what you don’t identify.
  2. Following the 5R Protocol based on test results:

Restoring Gut Health Using the 5R Protocol

  1. Remove: Eliminate inflammatory foods and reduce inflammation.
  2. Replace: Support digestion with hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes.
  3. Revive: Restore a healthy microbiome
  4. Repair: Address leaky gut and improve intestinal permeability.
  5. Remove Infections:  Proper integrative protocols may be needed for this step.

Each of these steps requires specific protocols and strategic prioritization. For example, infections must be addressed early as they are a major source of inflammation. Inflammation, in turn, disrupts digestion, contributes to dysbiosis, and exacerbates leaky gut.

Timing and a well-designed plan guided by your healthcare provider are critical for thorough healing. This approach ensures that each step builds upon the other for effective and lasting results.
