When facing a diagnosis like cancer, a well-designed, research-driven plan is essential. Although I am not an oncologist, my personal experiences and professional dedication to integrative and functional medicine have shaped my approach. I was diagnosed with melanoma at 28, lost my father to cancer when he was just 53, and have spent the last twenty years studying the causes, treatments, and solutions in functional and integrative medicine. For the past seven years, I’ve also worked at one of the country’s top integrative cancer and wellness centers, learning from some of the leading experts in integrative oncology.
Over the years I’ve helped hundreds, if not thousands, of patients implement this comprehensive plan, which I’ve applied to myself, family members, and my patients. My role has been that of an unbiased, experienced guide—a “third-party quarterback” steering them through their journey with the knowledge I’ve gained.
Cancer care shouldn’t leave patients feeling powerless or uncertain. Yet, when I was first diagnosed, I felt exactly that: unsure, fearful, and vulnerable. Despite being fit and healthy, I couldn’t understand how cancer had happened to me. When I asked doctors what had caused it or what else I could do, their only answer was sunscreen. That response never quite resonated with me, and I sensed there had to be more to the story.
Looking back, I realize that what I lacked was a plan—a way forward that could give me confidence and reduce my fear. Every small symptom filled me with worry: had the cancer come back? Had it spread? For those going through this right now, you know this feeling well. But over time, through learning and implementing a deeper plan, I regained a sense of control and peace. I no longer live in fear, and while no approach is foolproof, the security this plan provides is invaluable.
The power in this 6 Step plan lies in helping patients become active participants in their own healing journey. Too often in conventional medicine, patients feel like passive recipients of care, entirely dependent on their doctors.
My goal is simply share what I learned so you have control of the outcome and a plan that gives you the absolute best chance to win!
The 6 Steps to Optimize Your Outcome:
Step 1 - Pinpoint Testing
Step 2 - Reduce Fuel /Destroy Cancer Cells
Step 3 - Prevent Metastasis/Repair DNA and Mitochondria
Step 4 - Finding and Fixing Causes
Step 5 - Utilizing Affiliate Doctors and Clinics
Step 6 - Proper Surveillance and Post Care
Let's break each down
Effective testing is essential for developing a personalized plan. The conventional model of care use fairly standard protocols. It is important for me to share with you this concept, in which testing can be done to specify what chemo may work best, what repurposed drugs may work best, and what immunotherapy may be best. This is individualized medicine, and it is being done in the integrative world. May mentality is this...If I can utilize this testing to reduce the guesswork, I want that for my care. I want to use as many tools in the tool box to increase my chances of healing. It's really that simple. This testing may include:
Additionally, testing for Circulating Tumor Cells (CTCs) which may
increase the chance of metastatic disease and reoccurrence, is
critical. CTC's are cells that break off the primary tumor and travel
around the blood of the circulatory system, or lymph of the lymphatic
system. Testing for these, and working to reduce these, is critical for
long term healing.
Here are some of the companies that offer the above testing:
A. Tissue and liquid biopsy/Sensitivity Testing
1. Fulgent
2. Caris
3. Datar
4. Guardant 360
5. Signaterra ( Naterra )
6. RGCC
Here are some of the tumor markers and specialty testing your team may consider:
B. Cancer markers and speciality test
1. 15-3,
2. 27-29,
3. 19-9,
4. 125,
5. LDH,
6. CEA,
7. PSA free/total
8. Nagalase
9. PHI ( Phosphohexose Isomerase )
10. D-Dimer
Additional testing/Imaging
C. Imaging
a. CT/Pet/QT Imaging
b. MRI/Prenuvo
c. Ultra Sound
d. Xray
e. Nuclear Scan
f. CTA
g. DEXA
h. MUGA
i. 3 or 4D Echo
These are outlined for educational and reference purposes only. You should have a team to help navigate you through this testing and appropriate timing of follow up testing.
Reduce Fuel:
Destroy Cancer Cells:
I recommend working with an oncologist and integrative specialists for the Kill Phase. These treatments, while necessary for many, should be part of a comprehensive plan but not the sole focus.
In the standard oncology world, care is determined by guidelines which groups patients of the same cancer type and stage to receive similar treatments.
The challenge in cancer treatment lies in building the immune system to lessen the chances of recurrence and metastatic spread. The treatments in standard cancer treatment centers and hospitals are often reactive and not proactive. They are not designed to enhance the immune system, address the damaged cell, prevent cancer spread, or prevent recurrence.
This phase focuses on supporting your body through aggressive treatments, while also improving the cancer environment. It is important to understand that when a cell has damaged DNA and Mitochondria, certain changes in the cell take place. These should be addressed as they are a major cause in why the cell will mutate, become cancerous, and replicate. For clarity, this damage is a major cause of cancer and, in my opinion, has to be addressed for long term healing. This phase will also look at CTC's and work to reduce that burden, thus reducing the chances of metastasis and reoccurrence .
The repercussions of DNA/Mitochondrial damage include:
There are specific protocols, Iv's, modalities, therapies, and supplements that can be used to address each of these. We can determine the need and specificity for these during an initial consult.
Remember the concept ultimately causing cancer...
Causes of Inflammation/Metabolic Dysfunction - Free Radicals (oxidative stress) - Damage to DNA and Mitochondria - Replication of Mutated Cells = Cancer
To truly heal, we need to address the root causes of cancer. These include:
Identifying and correcting these factors is crucial for long-term healing.
One of the most important concepts I learned during my time at the integrative cancer center was the need to refer to doctors and clinics that could further help the patient achieve the best outcome. It should never be about the money, ego, or who gets the credit, it should always be about what the patient needs to win the battle. Here are some examples...
Potential Referrals and Additional Team Members
1. NIH / Clinical Trials - For some, these trials were important due to the
severity of their diagnosis. It is important to have a Plan A, B, and C.
2. Radiation Oncology
3. Oncologist
4. Surgical Oncologist
5. Gynecological Oncologist
6. Immunotherapy Specialist
7. Hyperthermia Center
8. International Clinics That May Have Specialty Treatments
9. Other Trusted Integrative Cancer Specialist that offer additional
helpful services
These are just some examples to make a point. Whoever you work with should have a "rolodex" to quickly refer to, and be able to explain why the referral is needed.
Another very important strategy I learned, and personally feel great about, is the thoroughness of surveillance testing and the timing of this testing. This could occur during care, which would be more frequent, or post care, which may be less frequent. Either way, we want to look at as many data points as possible. The more testing, and the more sensitive the testing, the earlier we can detect something brewing and can act swiftly. Scans are necessary as part of this surveillance, but they may not be sensitive enough to detect microscopic changes. Utilizing all of the tools below makes the most sense to me, personally.
Here are examples of the follow up testing and the timing of these tests. Please keep in mind these are prescribed individually based on many factors.
1. Follow up Testing and Timing of Testing
a. Tissue and liquid biopsy to monitor CTC burden (30-60-90 Days )
b. Cancer Markers Specific to the Diagnosis ( 4-6 weeks )
c. Speciality Testing such as Nagalase and PHI (30-60-90 Days)
d. General Blood work - Dictated by need
e. Imaging ( Usually 90 days or more )
2. Follow Up Consults - Weekly, BiWeekly, Monthly
- Follow up consults are one of the most important steps in the
process of healing. This allows your doctor to stay on top of the care. It
holds you and them accountable to the action steps needed to heal. My
advice is to make sure you schedule these accordingly. More is better, in my
opinion.
**A quick note on Post Care - I had an excellent Integrative Cancer doctor once tell me when a person achieves "No Evidence of Disease" the process is really just beginning. There is now a long period of proper surveillance, fixing causes, resetting the cellular terrain, and healing the body. This process may take years to accomplish. The plan above is part of that healing journey.
Remember This...
A thorough and detailed plan allows for less chance and more predictability. These 6 steps are designed to dramatically increase the predictability of your outcomes.
It is individualized, researched, and multi layered with the goal of leaving no stone unturned.
